Commenting on the publication of the final report by the independent Minimum Income Guarantee Expert Group, Professor Stephen Sinclair, Chair of the Poverty and Inequality Commission, said:
“A fully implemented Minimum Income Guarantee offers the radical vision of a Scotland where no-one’s income drops below a level required to live with dignity. The Commission welcomes this report, which offers a path to delivering this vision. Following the first steps set out in the report’s roadmap, which could start to be delivered today under existing devolved powers, would reduce child poverty by about half of the remaining distance to the 2030 child poverty targets.
“As the Commission said in our child poverty scrutiny report published yesterday, the Scottish Government needs more big ideas and actions if it is to meet its legal child poverty targets. The Minimum Income Guarantee is one such big idea, and we encourage the Scottish Government, and all interested parties, to give it serious consideration.”
