The Poverty and Inequality Commission provided a response to the call for evidence on the UK Child Poverty Strategy.
In its response, the Commission:
- Welcomes the UK Government’s commitment to addressing child poverty, particularly the lifting of the two-child limit.
- Indicates disappointment that there has been no change on the benefits cap nor five-week wait for Universal Credit, policies that directly push children into poverty. The Commission have also previously called for the UK Government to take further action to support children and families with No Recourse to Public Funds, including asylum seekers, who are at very high risk of the deepest poverty.
- Recommends the inclusion of measurable targets and interim targets in the UK Child Poverty Strategy, as has been the case in Scotland since 2017.
- Wants to see more evidence of the UK and Scottish governments working with each other to reduce child poverty and hopes the months to come see more collaboration on this shared aim.
